I've been wanting to redesign the site for quite a while now. Almost there. It's much more slick than the current version, and will be scalable (for mobile). Looks like this so far. Tentatively I'm hoping for a Feb 28 launch!

Scion Magazine Issue 5 (the Storytelling issue) continues in the same format as issue #4: 48 page magazine at 10.25" x 14.5", printed on the matte recycled stock.
This is definitely my favourite of the covers for the magazine. Not only is it very different from what we've produced thus far, it's our first photographed cover (issue 3 only the cars were photographed, so that doesn't count). It also probably looks the simplest, but it wasn't! There was so much prep work beforehand in painstakingly designing and building the covers (which would not have been possible without our fab interns Olivia Truong and Ilona Fiddy), and then beautifully photographed by Andrew B. Myers.
The textures and patterns are a combination of papers from 'the Paper Place' on Queen West in Toronto (I could totally just spend the day here...), as well as our own designs. The book spine designs reflect each of the stories in the magazine, as it works as a Table of Contents page as well. The challenge I face is always the bilingual factor, (as it is a Canadian magazine) with an English and French version. The type was added in post. To bring in 'car content' we put the 'Scion Book' on the front cover, reveals that it's Scion coffee table book on the back cover, with a Scion tC on its cover. CHECK IT OUT HERE!
I'm sure everybody has seen the movie: 'Kill Bill vol.1' by Quentin Tarantino. Lucy Liu's character borrows quite a lot from a character in a 1973 Japanese film called 'Lady Snowblood', starring Kaji Meiko. She also sings the theme song, which is also used for the final battle scene between Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman in 'Kill Bill'. If you don't know it, take a look here. Similarities are all over the place! Such a fun film.
Anyhow, this main character became the theme for my submission for the DOS group show. If you haven't seen what I did last year, take a look here. This time around, I attempted another mash up of cultures with the 'Dia de los Muertos' theme with Japanese Samurai Cinema. I wanted to keep it dark, but unlike last year, I wanted it to be badass.

Illustration, New Artwork | La Carnita, cloud, lacarnita, mexican skull, pig, pyramid, skull | Permalink This was for an upcoming Grantland book (no 5? or is it 6?) for an article, 'In Memoriam: Adam Yauch (1964-2012)'. My way of honoring him, HAD TO BE with all of the Beastie Boys together of course. As a unit, at the peak of their careers, just after the release of 1998's 'Hello Nasty'. The first single off of the album was 'Intergalactic', and for me I had heard it by watching the video on MuchMusic. It just blew me away, having rap music over their ode to old school Japanese TV superheroes (also known as 'tokusatsu'). I watched the real TV shows ever since I was a little boy. So in coming up with ideas for this article, it was almost instant that I thought of that video, because it made the biggest impression on me visually as a band (with 'Sabotage' in close second). If you haven't seen the video, check it here (seriously you haven't seen it?).
'Oh and what color did you go with?' you might ask. Bright Pantone Yellow of course. Duh. Maybe I should offer this as a print? :)

Illustration, New Artwork | Art, Comic, Illustration, beastie-boys, beastieboys, grantland, hero, intergalactic, manga, nostalgia, record, retro | Permalink Over the last few months I remember my response to the usually welcoming line, 'Shingo I have a great project for you!' was turned down with, 'I can't, I'm sorry I'm very busy.’ That wonderful project I've been working on for the last three months was the fourth issue of Scion magazine with Editor-in-Chief, Lisa Marie Chen. I was responsible for the overall art direction, with duties on illustration and design as well.
It has now been printed, and will be distributed out to stores very soon across Canada. Pretty exciting!
You will notice (photos coming soon), that the format has changed. Previous issues measured at a tiny 5.5" x 7.125". Scion magazine is now a whopping 10.5 x 14.5" on the same bright white recycled stock, and 48 pages.
For every issue, we try to give a little ‘something something’ for the reader. So to commemorate this music focused issue, there is a pullout Scion branded 'gig poster'.
Stylistically there is more range. I went looser with the design template, at the same time showcasing a broader range of style (minimal, hand drawn, hand written, hand made, etc.), which is what I was hoping to achieve. It gives the magazine a ‘warmer’ feel than the previous issues. Kind of like the feeling when you flip through a pile of eye catchy record covers. It also features some great photography by Andy Lee, as well as some great collage illustrations by Rachel Kennedy.
So without further ado, it is with great pleasure, I give you a glimpse of Scion magazine Issue 4, the 'Music Issue'.
